Children Of The City by Amadis Ma. Guerrero
Children of the City is a short story written by Guerrero and won the Palanca Awards in 1971. This short story is about how life can suddenly turn into good and bad experiences. It shows how people's attitude can affect the personality of other people. The characters involved are Victor; the boy. Victor's Father, Victor's Mother; the person who didn't take care of Victor. Stranger; the new found love of Victor's Mother, Nacio; the friend of Victor in his newspaper job and Tio Pedring, the uncle of Victor.
In the story, the father of Victor was involved in a rally. The father of Victor is taking care of him, but one day, his father was shot in the chest which lead him to death. His wife, the mother of Victor, suffers about the death of his husband. With that, it affected his mother's life to the point that she doesn't take care of Victor anymore. Until one day, his mother came home with some random stranger which appears to be the new man of his mother. She wanted the stranger to be Victor's new father, but Victor doesn't want to.
Luckily, Victor's uncle volunteered himself to take care of him wherein he gave Victor a job which is to be a newspaper boy. Victor started to sell newspapers and while he's at work, he met Nacio who also sells newspaper. Nacio played an important role to Victor's life because he taught him some tricks on how to sell newspapers fast.
Unfortunately, Nacio was hit by a car which resulted death. For the second time, Victor mourns again because of the loss if his friend. Since Victor lost a friend, he had no one to protect him that is why he joined a group of people who always do inappropriate actions. If Victor refuses to smoke, his so called "new friends" will beat him up as a punishment for not smoking with them.
If I were to compare this to Marcos, I'd say that its somehow similar to the people who were killed because they're against the presidency of Marcos. Like what happened to Victor's father, he was killed because he believed in another perspective.
In the story, it showed how people change if they are not guided by the people around them.
